Are you passionate about public service? Do you aspire to make a meaningful impact on your country’s future? If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and take part in the day-to-day work of the federal government, the White House Internship Program offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to do just that. Applications are now open for the Summer 2025 session, and we’re inviting students and recent graduates from all backgrounds to apply.
What Is the White House Internship Program?
The White House Internship Program is a highly competitive, hands-on experience that allows young Americans to contribute directly to the work of the Executive Office of the President. Interns serve in various White House departments and offices, supporting the Biden-Harris Administration’s initiatives, policy goals, and day-to-day operations. It’s more than an internship—it’s a chance to serve your country, grow as a leader, and gain a deep understanding of the executive branch.
Key Details:
- Dates: June 9, 2025 – August 15, 2025
- Location: In-person, White House campus, Washington, D.C.
- Schedule: Full-time (35–40 hours/week) or part-time options available
- Stipend: $750/week for full-time interns; $375/week for part-time interns
What You’ll Do
As a White House intern, you’ll be assigned to one of several departments across the Executive Office, such as the Office of the Vice President, the Office of Public Engagement, or the Domestic Policy Council. Your responsibilities will vary depending on your placement, but typical tasks include:
- Drafting memos and briefing materials
- Conducting policy research
- Attending meetings with senior staff
- Assisting with communications and event planning
- Participating in internal trainings and mentorship programs
Beyond daily duties, interns will also engage in a weekly speaker series featuring White House officials and participate in community service projects throughout the summer.
Who Should Apply?
We’re looking for individuals who are committed to public service, demonstrate leadership potential, and bring diverse perspectives to the table. Whether you’re studying political science, computer science, business, history, or the arts, your unique background can help shape national initiatives.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be at least 18 years old by the start of the internship
- Be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, an accredited college or university (within two years)
- Or, be a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces who has a high school diploma or equivalent and was discharged no more than two years prior to the program start date
We strongly encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds to apply, including first-generation college students, community college attendees, and veterans.
How to Apply
Applications for Summer 2025 are due by February 21, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET. To apply, you’ll need to submit:
- A one-page resume
- Two short essays (300–500 words each)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Basic background information
All applications must be submitted through the official White House Internship Program application portal. Be sure to start early—recommendation letters and thoughtful essays take time.
Selection and Onboarding
Following submission, applications go through a review process conducted by White House staff. Finalists will be contacted for interviews, and selected interns will undergo a background check to receive security clearance.
Once accepted, interns will receive onboarding materials and program orientation details. You’ll be expected to find your own housing and transportation in Washington, D.C., so planning ahead is key.
What You’ll Gain
This isn’t just another internship—it’s a launchpad for a career in public service. Alumni of the program have gone on to work in Congress, federal agencies, nonprofits, and think tanks. Many return to the White House later in their careers as full-time staff or advisors.
Interns walk away with:
- Firsthand insight into how policies are crafted and implemented
- Exposure to senior leadership and influential decision-makers
- Strong professional networks and lifelong friendships
- Experience that sets your résumé apart, regardless of your field
